Rfid Tags in Asset Management
The application and development of RFID tags has opened up greater opportunity for innovation in the field of intelligent asset management. In theory, at least, anywhere you have used a barcode tag is a potential candidate for using an RFID tag.
The application and development of RFID tags has opened up greater opportunity for innovation in the field of intelligent asset management. In theory, at least, anywhere you have used a barcode tag is a potential candidate for using an RFID tag.
The term ‘RFID’ covers a multitude of different technologies and tag types. It is not however a Utopia. In the field of asset management the tags generally fall into two camps:
1. Powered.
2. Passive.
In the mainstream asset management marketplace it is the passive tags that seem to predominate as powered tags have a much higher base cost and tend to be somewhat larger and bulkier by design.
Passive RFID tags cover two main technologies. These are based on the frequency at which they operate:
- 125 Hz – used mostly in the US market
- 13.56 Mhz – used predominantly in Europe/Middle East and SE Asia.
Limitations of use
There is nothing complicated about an RFID tag. It is simply a further methodology by which you can give an asset a unique identity. There are various designs of RFID tag, each having specific properties e.g. fire proof, waterproof, protected from abrasion, heat resistant, having memory etc. Such performance also imparts certain disadvantages e.g. the tag read quality maybe less, adherence performance etc. It is therefore very important when selecting an RFID tag to properly evaluate the service in which it will operate and its limitations. It is also important to correctly fix the tag to the item taking into account any possible interferences e.g. fixing to metal surfaces, magnetic fields, extremes of heat/cold etc.
So I have RFID’d everything - What do I do then?
This is the most important question. Without a way of collecting and changing the data the RFID tagging will not fulfil anywhere near its overall potential.
Kodit is committed to providing innovative end toend data management solutions to deliver accurate and high quality performance in the field of intelligent asset management. The single most important aspect of data management, especially when related to the use of database solutions, is the data quality.
The key components of any end to end solution are:
- The tag type to be used.
- How the tags will be read e.g. mobile or fixed readers.
- What happens to the data as it is generated.
- How the user accesses the data.
- What do we want to get from the data.
- Data security
In defining the answers to each of these areas Kodit use a unique engagement process with all potential clients called Accuspec. This process has evolved over many years and explores all areas as set out above and the how the findings in each area contribute to an overall solution specification. It is at this stage that any proving work is conducted especially in the areas of tag type selection and reader technology and options.
A key process in the development of any asset management solution is defining the overall workflow, access requirements and output requirements from the collected data.
Kodit is skilled in the definition, development and deployment of complete database solutions. These solutions combine the initial data collections and tagging technology, the workflow and process steps required and the eventual capture and delivery of data in whatever form or format as required.
This experience has been built over many years and covers a variety of application areas:
- Small items management in schools.
- Management of headsets in call centres
- The delivery of mobile asset management in the field.
- The complete end to end management of a major hardware distribution hub and break fix managed service capability in the UK.
- The delivery of a mobile asset management solution for the offshore oil-spill response units world-wide.
- The provision of mobile asset tagging and audit capability for fire and rescue services in the UK.
Access to data is delivered over a fully mobile web application providing for real time data updates or can be used on batched mobile device and synchronised when back at an appropriate connection point.
